CACOL CONDEMNS BUHARI’S APPOINTMENT AS UNN GOVERNING COUNCIL MEMBER

The Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL) has condemned the appointment of the former Speaker House of Representatives, Alhaji Salisu Buhari, as a member of the Governing Council of University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

According to a statement issued by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, in Abuja, President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the composition and appointments of the chairmen and members of the governing councils for some federal universities. University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has Prof. Emeka Enejere as the Chairman of Council, while Alhaji Salisu Buhari, Chador  Labar,  Harison Onwu, and Chief Akin Taiwo are members.

Speaking on behalf of the Coalition, its Executive Chairman, Debo Adeniran derided the Federal Government for appointing an academic fraudster like Buhari to decide the fate of some Nigerian students.

“ It is such a shameful thing for the FG to appoint Mallam Salisu Buhari, who did not only perpetrate academic fraud by cooking-up his academic qualifications, but also falsified his age to enable him meet age requirement for the speakership position he was vying for then. How can our leaders forget history so soon? If the likes of Buhari could be appointed to hold a membership position in one of the Nigerian Universities, it is a signal that our leaders do not really care what the whole world thinks about us. It means the ruling class could go on and on to insult our sensibility as Nigerians because a certificate forger appointed to be part of a university governing council would definitely give a leeway to forge more certificates.

What do we need despicable people for? What message is the President trying to pass across to our youths and the Nigerian populace by this appointment? Does it mean our country has no men of integrity that are worthy of emulation to run the affairs of our universities? Putting con-men and certificate forger on our University boards is tantamount to casting our pearl before a swine. This will only deepen the rot in our educational system. University board appointments should not be politicized or reduced to rewarding party faithful and sympathizers without recourse to morality,” Adeniran submitted.

The human rights activist however urged the federal government to, as matter urgency; revoke the appointment of Alhaji Salisu Buhari as a Governing Council member of University Of Nigeria, Nsukka.
